التفاصيل

Objective: To examine the effect of adding knee tape to conventional exercise protocol used in treating patellofemoral osteoarthritic patients. Methods: Randomized, single blind, controlled trial with two intervention arms the taping group received therapeutic knee tape with conventional exercise protocol while the control group received placebo knee tape with the same conventional exercise protocol which consist of stretching exercises, range of motion exercises and strengthening exercises. 43 male patients with patellofemoral OA were enrolled in the study, 40 (20 for each group) patients completed the 4 weeks intervention with 3 sessions each week. The primary out-come measurement was made by knee osteoarthritis out-come score KOOS and the secondary out-come measurements were including WOMAC, pain measured by VAS and 6MWT. Result: In both groups the improvement was strongly obvious between baseline and the end of the study in all of the studied variables either primary or secondary. Patients who were treated with therapeutic knee tape experienced clinically and statistically significant improvement in self-perception of pain and symptoms measured with KOOS. Pain and stiffness subscales of WOMAC showed a significant difference between taping and placebo knee tape groups. VAS showed as will a significant difference toward taping group compared with control group. The result showed there were no significant improvements in taping group compared with control group in ADL and QOL subscales of KOOS, in functional subscale of WOMAC and in 6MWT parameters. Conclusion: Adding knee tape to exercise protocol used in treating knee OA with patellofemoral joint involvement have a positive impact on pain but not on functional ability of the patients.
